Today In Review

Today is an interesting one. I made a couple of trades during the day and held on for dear life after hours for a mixed NFLX earnings report. Let’s dive in.

AXP

I’ve noted in previous posts I’m not too excited about banking stocks at this point in time given the March issues. However I was inspired by the strength of the consumer to investigate AXP further when the AI flagged it this morning.

First thing I saw was the AI projecting a mostly flat run but with a bias towards the upside tail looking ahead in the coming days:

When I looked at the traditional technicals however I saw a mix of results. The hourly Ichimoku looked positive, but the Bollinger Bands looked like it was already towards the upper end of its fair value range:

So being not super bullish, I didn’t want to roll the dice on a long time frame and instead focus on just this week.

Now, the AI was showing the clearest put to write to be around $150 strike. However the premiums that low were just not tradable:

So in this case I decided to take a very large risk and write a put for $160 (AXP was trading at $163). Again, I’m probably only doing this because it’s fake money. But my rationale is that there appears to be a line of support somewhere around $159-$160. Given the premium is large that gives me buffer to below $158 for the next 3 days.

TSLA

As always, TSLA was also hot on the board. For this one I had a significantly quicker analysis. But basically the premiums were too good to resist, and as a couple weeks ago I was happy to trade TSLA and take the risk of being put the shares and having to write some calls against it.

The AI was point to the $170 range and TSLA was currently trading at $184. For $1.77 premium I was more than happy to give it a go. So I quickly wrote the put expiring this week.

After Hours – NFLX Watching

NFLX reported earnings after the closing bell today. Last week I wrote a put for a $330 call, expiring this Friday, for a very large premium. Today was a key moment, if it had a good earnings report then surely the price would moon and I’d be safe with my premium.

Earnings today however were mixed. NFLX beat EPS estimates but missed on revenue. The after hours price immediately tanked 10% to close to $300 but at time of writing has recovered to $330. Three more days until expiration will be interesting. I have a very high likelihood of being put this stock at this point.

Closing Thoughts

NFLX after hours is active! Extremely likely I write some calls this week, or take a capital loss. That sounds like a problem for future Jim.
